South Korea will build four additional nuclear reactors by 2030 and extend the life of 10 older units. This is intended to help reduce carbon emissions to zero. Nuclear power will provide over 30 per cent of the country’s electricity by the end of the decade, up from 27.4 per cent at the end of 2021.
President Yoon Suk Yeol, who took office in May, has reversed his predecessor’s policy of phasing out nuclear policy. Construction of Shin Hanul 3 and 4 units, which were scrapped under the previous government, will be resumed.
