Vickie Kaminski, acting Chief Executive for SA Health, said the backup generator at Flinders Medical Centre failed in the blackout because of a fuel pump issue. The Port Augusta hospital’s generator also stopped working, and had to be replaced with two smaller generators.

Kaminski said that there will be a review of backup power for all South Australia’s hospitals, following a detailed investigation of the two generator failures during the blackout.

Power was lost across South Australia on 28th September when high winds tore down 23 transmission towers in the state’s mid-north.
