A 9.8 MW solar power plant will be built at the site of Dangjin Eco Power’s coal-fired power plant in South Chungcheong Province. This will mark the first time that a renewable energy facility will be constructed at a site set aside for a coal-fired power plant in South Korea’s under the Government’s energy conversion policy.
Baek Woon-kyu, Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, said: “There are 30 coal-fired power plants in South Chungcheong Province. If we build another coal-fired power plant in the area, it will have a direct impact on air quality of the Seoul metropolitan area. Dangjin Eco Power’s coal-fired power plant will be moved to Ulsan and Eumseong. We will build a solar power plant on the site instead.”
Initially, Korea East-West Power and SK Gas wanted to construct two 580 MW coal-fired power plants in Dangjin through Dangjin Eco Power. The project was approved in April 2017. The new Government under Moon Jae-in introduced a coal power phase-out policy that brought the project to a halt.
