Capital Power Corporation , based in Edmonton, Alberta, and Ontario Power Generation are working together to assess the feasibility of developing SMRs to help power Alberta’s electricity grid.
The two companies said in an announcement that SMRs will be critical if Alberta and Canada are to meet growing demand for zero-carbon electricity. Avik Day, CEO of Capital Power, said that the feasibility assessment will take two years to complete and will include ownership and operating structures for a potential fleet of grid-scale SMRs in Alberta. He said: “Creating a carbon-neutral energy system that prioritises reliability and affordability while accommodating growing demand is one of the most unprecedented transformations of our time. Nuclear power is and must be a critical part of the clean energy transition if we are to become carbon-neutral.”
