An SMR nuclear power plant design from NuScale Technology for a facility in southeast Idaho, USA is being processed through the federal regulatory framework. Edward McGinnis, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, said that the NuScale Technology design represents the next generation in nuclear energy and would be game changing for Utah and other potential customers.
The energy cooperative is a community-owned, non-profit political subdivision of Utah.
Once completed in 2026 at a 35-acre site at the Idaho National Laboratory, the energy coalition will own the project, which is the first of its kind in the country to come under review of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and receive funding support from the US Department of Energy.
The project envisions cylindrical modular reactors measuring 76 feet by 15 feet installed underground, each capable of generating 50 MW. The Idaho site would have between 6-12 reactors.
