The turbine will be installed at the 400 MW Bugok 3 power plant which will attain a record efficiency of 60 per cent, while supplying electricity to more than 300 000 people. The natural gas-fired power plant is scheduled to come on line in the summer of 2013.

“Our H Class gas turbines are characterised by maximised energy efficiency, thus achieving successful climate protection. After the Irsching 4 project in Germany, an order for six turbines for Florida Power & Light in the U.S. and now Bugok 3 in South Korea, our world-record gas turbine will be deployed on three continents. We also see great interest in our most advanced gas turbine technology from Russia, Brazil, Germany, France and Turkey,” said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy.

Siemens will supply the Bugok 3 power plant as a turnkey project. The scope of supply includes a new-generation SGT6-8000H gas turbine, SST6-5000HI-L steam turbine, a hydrogen-cooled generator SGEN6-2000H, a Benson-type heat recovery steam generator as well as electrical equipment and the instrumentation and control system SPPA-T3000. A long-term maintenance agreement was also concluded for the main components.

“We place special emphasis on maximised efficiency and environmental friendliness. For that reason we opted for a solution provided by Siemens, which features cutting-edge power plant technology,” said Lee Wan-Kyoung, President and CEO of GS EPS.

The new Siemens H Class gas turbine generation made its market entry in mid-2010 and, compared with the previous generation of gas fired power plants, reduced gas consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately one third. Compared to coal fired power plants the H Class reduces CO2 emissions by as much as 75 per cent.

Bugok 3 will be the ninth combined cycle power plant built by Siemens in South Korea in the last ten years. With a combined installed capacity of 13 000 MW these power plants are capable of generating sufficient electricity for approximately ten million people.
