Siemens and STEAG GuD Herne have signed an agreement for the turnkey construction of a combined cycle power plant with district heat extraction, along with a long-term service agreement. The plant will be built on the site of an existing power plant owned by STEAG in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Herne in Germany. The Herne 6 plant will have an electrical capacity of over 600 MW. Steam will also be extracted, and the thermal energy obtained will be used for the district heating grid of Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. The overall fuel efficiency of the plant will be above 85 per cent.

The plant’s key components will be manufactured in Germany: the steam turbine and generator will be made in Mülheim, and the H-class gas turbine at Siemens’ gas turbine factory in Berlin. The plant is scheduled to start operations in Spring 2022.
