Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) will supply two onshore wind farms in South Africa, with a total of 109 turbines. The SWT-2.3-108 turbines each have a rated capacity of 2.3 MW and a 108 m rotor diameter.
The 140 MW Kangnas wind farm is located near Springbok in the Northern Cape, and the 110 MW Perdekraal East wind farm is located 80 km northeast of Ceres in the Western Cape. There is a 10-year full service agreement with each wind farm.
The Department of Energy in South Africa awarded the contracts for the wind farms to a consortium led by Mainstream Renewable Power, as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). Supply of the wind turbines will start in early 2019, and completion of both wind farms is scheduled for 2020.
The Mainstream Renewable Power consortium is the owner of the wind farms. Mainstream is an independent global developer of renewable energy based in Dublin, Ireland.
