According to Sahara Group officials, the company is in talks with Volta River Authority (VRA) to build the thermal power plant.

The news follows recent events where Sahara Group completed Nigeria’s largest thermal power plant, the Egbin Power plant, in Lagos. This plant has a capacity of 1320 MW with the potential to expand to up to 2640 MW. The plant is currently Nigeria’s largest thermal power plant.

Ghana has faced a number of challenges related to its power generation capacity in recent years, as power generation deficit usually fluctuates between 150 MW and 250 MW. Additionally, much of Ghana’s power generation comes from hydropower plants, which are prone to problems when water levels drop.

The Sahara Group currently has a 60 per cent stake in Nigeria’s Ikeja Electricity Distribution company and a 70 per cent stake in First Independent Power Ltd, making it the largest power producer in the country. The company hopes to recreate this model in Ghana.
