Ruzizi III hydropower project secures additional finance

The government of Rwanda signed the agreement with AfDB for the 147 MW rated project yesterday.

Ruzizi III is a public-private partnership and will involve the construction of a run-of-river dam straddling the Ruzizi river between the DRC and Rwanda, as well as the 147 MW power plant and distribution network.

The project should increase the region’s access to electricity by over 300 per cent and contribute to the sustainable socio-economic transformation of the region. Burundi, the DRC and Rwanda have all had difficulties in meeting electricity demand due to a lack of significant energy investment during the past decade, while their economy and population have continued to grow.

The East African Power Pool will also benefit from this project.
