Russia plans to invest up to $147 million new solar PV and hybrid power plants in the country’s southern Altai region, near Kazakhstan, according to Avelar, a state-run green construction firm.
Avelar has has agreed a deal with state-owned Khevel and the local Altai government to construct the solar and hybrid-diesel plants, and plans grid connection by 2018.
“Under the agreement, we are to construct solar power plants in the Altai republic with the total energy generation capacity up to 45 MW to supply the Wholesale Electric Energy and Power Market,” Avelar revealed in a statement on May 30th.
Avelar’s is also planning hybrid autonomous solar-powered diesel stations with a total capacity of 200 kW for more remote areas of the region.
Avelar has already launched a 5 MW solar power project in Altai’s Kosh-Agach area, an area with solar activity comparable to that of southern Italy.
Once operational it will be the region’s first solar power plant, which Avelar hopes will be the first of many.
