The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has shut down six thermal power stations to enable the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) carry out repair work on a ruptured gas pipeline. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs for TCN, said that the shutdown affected a total of 1087.6 MW. She said that the six power plants were unable to generate electricity due to the ruptured gas pipeline and technical issues at the gas wells.

TCN said that the power stations affected, in whole or in part, by the ruptured gas line included: Ihovbar, Azura, Omotosho, Geregu, Olorunsogo, Sapele, and Egbin. It also said that Afam VI power station was shut down so that Shell could resolve the gas well issues to enable it to commence gas supply to Afam VI power station.

Mbah said: “With a total loss of 1087.6 MW into the grid, the transmission system has become fragile and TCN is working hard to avert a collapse of the system, by engaging in load-shedding.”
