Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca has announced that two new reactors will be built at Cernavoda nuclear power plant in the southeast of the country after Romania arranged two loans from the US. Ciuca said that the preliminary work phase, financed with a US loan of $50 million, will be completed by 2025. Construction of the two reactors, funded with a US loan of $3 billion, is scheduled for completion by 2030.
Two units already operate at Cernavoda. This project will expand that to four operating units. Cernavoda is owned by the state company Nuclearelectrica , which contributes over 18 per cent of total energy production in the country.
Virgil Popescu, Romania’s Economy and Energy Minister, said the agreement allows Romania access to US CANDU 6 technology, and that the works would be carried out by a consortium of companies from US, Canada, and France.
