Whilst giving evidence to the House of Lords committee looking into industrial and environmental pressures on the North Sea, Nick Medic, RenewableUK's representative, stated how with the right framework the East of England could be a hub for wind energy projects.

Medic told the committee that there was sufficient technology for the UK to connect and trade with Norway and Iceland, but that there was not a regulatory framework to facilitate such an arrangement.

Medic said: "We are already seeing a lot of investment in the eastern region, such as in Lowestoft, we could easily see the doubling of what the UK provides in wind energy over the next five years."

Some of the biggest offshore wind farms in the North Sea are off the coast of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
