Renewables overtake fossil fuels as Italy’s main source of electricity

The Italian grid operator Terna has announced that national electricity generation from renewable sources made up 43.8 per cent of all energy demand in the first half of 2024, a historic record on a half-year basis. This compares with 34.9 per cent during the same period in 2023.

Fossil fuels saw a 19 per cent decrease year-over-year, and coal production dropped by 77.3 per cent.

The increase in renewables was driven largely by hydropower, which saw an increase of 64.8 per cent y-o-y for an output of 25.92 TWh. Wind and solar increased by 29.2 per cent and 18.2 per cent respectively for the six-month period.
