National Grid also believes that if embedded wind generation is taken into account, about 10 per cent of Britain’s power was generated by wind yesterday.
National Grid figures also show that around half of the electricity generation in the UK is supplied by gas-fired power stations, with coal making up almost a third, and nuclear 15 per cent.
Wind’s contribution is also expected to fall further as the week progresses, halving Monday’s figure on Tuesday night and halving that again on Wednesday.
Given this it appears the UK’s abundance of potential wind energy has some way to go to being fully harnessed.
