Rotating daily brownouts in Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines have been reduced from 5 hours to 2-3 hours, as the onset of the rainy season has eased the situation of the hydropower plants. Rainfall in northern Mindanao, where the hydropower plants are located, has been regular in recent weeks.

Marilyn Chavez, spokesman for the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco), said the new power outage schedule is based on the continuing curtailment imposed by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The National Power Corporation (Napocor), operator of the power plants, has yet to officially comment on the situation at the hydropower water sources, including at Lake Lanao and Pulangi’s dam. However, an official commented that the power plants could not run at maximum capacity, as the water levels at the dams are still at curtailment levels.
