Reuters has reported that the Nuclear Pride Coalition will be demonstrating in favour of nuclear power in central Brussels on 20 October, from 11.00 to 2.00 PM, as part of its “Stand up for Nuclear” day of action. The Nuclear Pride Coalition said that it aims “to convey the importance of this clean, stable, cost-effective, and practically CO2-free form of power generation.
The event organisers said: “We will stand up at train stations, central plazas, and public parks to educate people about the importance of nuclear, and address widespread myths around nuclear energy.”
The pro-nuclear energy march in Brussels is one of 30 such marches due to take place in different cities across the world.
Belgium has two nuclear plants, Tihange and Doel, with a total of seven reactors at the two sites. The Belgium Government committed in 2018 to phase out its generation of nuclear power by 2025. Electricity transmission system operator Elia has warned that the country would struggle to phase out its nuclear power by 2025 without suffering serious power shortages.
