India plans to construct 80 000 MW of generation capacity during its 12th Five Year Plan 2012-17, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has said.
This compares to the targeted 42 000 MW of generation capacity planned for the 10th Plan period (2002-7), of which 21 000 MW was completed, and the target of 78 775 MW for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12), which was subsequently revised to 62 000 MW and saw 55 000 MW completed.
"In the 12th Plan, 80 000 MW of generation capacity is under construction," Shinde said, adding that India currently has an installed generation capacity of 194 000 MW.
As evidence of recent improvements in meeting targets, Shinde also noted that in 2011-12, 20 400 MW of capacity was added, much higher than the projection of 17 000 MW.
