Iraq’s electricity ministry has announced that gas delivery to the power plants in its Kurdistan region have been halted as a safety precaution following an attack on Khor Mor gas field. The ministry said this has led to a drop in electricity generation of 2800 MW.
A security source said that the Khor Mor field, operated by the UAE-based Dana Gas, was attacked on 25 January. It was, apparently, immediately clear if the attack was carried out with drones or rockets. There have been no reports of casualties from the attack.
The electricity ministry said in a statement: “At 10.22 pm on 25 January due to a fire in the Khor Mor gas field, for the sake of the safety of employees and the field, gas exports to all power plants were suspended and caused a reduction of more than 2800 MW of electricity production. As the situation normalises, the electricity production will return to normal.”
Khor Mor field have come under rocket attacks several times over the past few years, reportedly by Iraqi militia groups affiliated with Iran.
