Because the available water behind the Koyana dam in the Satara district of western Maharashtra is at a low level, the fourth phase of the 1000 MW power generation facility has been shut down.
Sanjay Chopade, Chief Engineer at the Koyana hydropower plant, said that the Indian federal government had mandated the closure in order that the water be reserved for domestic and agricultural use until the monsoon rains. He added that industries in the area could be affected by a shortage of power generation.
