REN , Portugal’s national grid operator, said that the country obtained a record amount of its power from clean energy sources in 2023, with renewables accounting for 61 per cent of power use.
Wind power provided 25 per cent of Portugal’s electricity in 2023, ahead of hydropower on 23 per cent. Solar PV provided 7 per cent and biomass 6 per cent. The strongest growth was in hydropower, which increased by 70 per cent from the 2022 level as the country recovered from the drought of that year.
Solar PV rose 43 per cent as a result of growing installation of domestic panels.
In addition, 20 per cent of Portugal’s electricity was imported from Spain, leaving just 19 per cent coming from non-renewable domestic generation. As a result, the country’s natural gas imports, mostly LNG from Nigeria and the USA fell 21 per cent in 2023 compared to the 2022 level.
