Polish power firms are “planning new power plants in a chaotic manner” and “not all projects make sense”, according to Mikolaj Budzanowski, the country's treasury minister.

"If one looks at the investment schedule of Polish power plants, I see total chaos," he told an industry conference.

Polish power plant construction plans “need to be harmonized and some of the planned plants will cancel each other out”, he said, declining from naming specific projects. “Decisions about investments in new power plants are being made too slowly,” he added.

Several companies are planning or building new power generation projects in Poland, including gas-fired and nuclear power plants.

State-controlled power utility Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) has said it plans to invest 330 billion zlotys ($104 billion) through 2012-35 in new electricity generation projects. The company expects to reduce its reliance on coal-fired power plants and generate 36 per cent of its electricity from nuclear power by 2035.

State-controlled oil firm PKN Orlen SA also said it has plans to build new gas-fired power plants.
