The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) reached a capacity of 3800 MW in June 2010, and is trying to achieve a capacity of 6000 MW by the end of 2010. This target has been set by the Nigerian Government. In addition, President Goodluck Jonathan has approved an enhanced welfare package for electricity workers in the country. Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Somo Wya, said that the package was to “encourage and motivate the workers so as to double their efforts in the current drive to resolve, once and for all, the perennial power crisis plaguing the nation.”

Data from PHCN shows that over 500 MW has been made available through rehabilitation and upgrading work. A spokesman for PHCN said: “We hope to achieve 4000 MW during the first week of July for the first time in the history of electricity generation in Nigeria, as we expect to receive an additional 200 MW from Afam VI of Shell, and the units at Egbin and Jebba currently undergoing annual maintenance will come back on line.”
