Pakistan and China have signed a $4.8 billion agreement to build Chashma 5, which will be the seventh Chinese nuclear power plant in Pakistan.
The 1200 MW plant will be built at Chashma, where China has already built four reactors with a combined capacity of 1230 MW. According to the terms of the agreement, the reactor will use HPR 1000 technology. This will be the third facility in Pakistan to use this technology.
Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, said: “Investment from China in this project to the tune of $4.8 billion sends a loud and clear message that Pakistan is a place where Chinese companies and investors continue to show their trust and faith. This project is part of our energy security plan to diversify the energy mix with a focus on ensuring the provision of cheap electricity to industry.”
