Speaking at the meeting of Board of Directors of Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB), he said that Pakistan’s wind power generation potential of more than 300 000 MW needs much greater consideration. The government is reportedly attaching high priority to the power sector and is making moves to encourage investors. He confirmed that a new incentive-based alternative energy policy is being finalised, and the draft is almost ready.

At the same event, it was reported that the Three Gorges Corporation of China has started construction of a 50 MW wind project while another is in the pipeline. Zorlu Energy of Turkey has completed all the formalities for their power project, and official signing is to be completed shortly. There is a further 100 MW wind project in its construction phase in Sindh province.

More Pakistani wind power projects have also been given the go ahead.

Naveed Qamar said that as the government has announced its upfront tariff for wind power projects, an upfront tariff will also be announced for coal and solar power generation, helping to generate cheaper electricity and meet future requirements.

He also assured that prospective investors would be able to lease land in the wind corridor without any delays once formalities were completed.
