Pakistan’s Water and Power Minister, Abid Sher Ali, has outlined a list of almost 13 GW of upcoming power projects set to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The announcement was made ahead of the opening of two coal-fired power plants at Port Qasim in Karachi with a collective capacity of 1320 MW.
The list includes 6660 MW capacity power plants in Gadani, two 660 MW power plants at Jamshoro, the 4300 MW Dasu hydropower project Terbela-5 extension project and the 1100 MW Kohala hydropower project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Sher Ali reiterated the government’s promise that Pakistan would have a self-sufficient power sector within three years and stated that the premier had made reducing load-shedding a priority.
Sher Ali claimed that power outages have increased due to water supply problems with the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).
“Irsa reduced water releases from the Kabul River, resulting in a drop in the power supply from 600 to 700 MW,” he said.
Pakistan’s total power generation stands at 11 GW, which implies a shortfall of 3000 GW even without disruptions due to fuel and water shortages.
