He said that following the controversies over the new RPPs in the media, the ministry decided to hire a third and neutral party as arbitrator. The ADB, after due deliberations, approved eight RPPs which would generate 850MW. The minister said that the aim of the government was to remove the gap between demand and supply of electricity, and it decided on RPPs as a short-term solution. However, the government was also building hydropower dams and developing Thar coal in the long-term. He said work on the Diamer Bhasha dam would start at the end of 2010, and the Thar coal deposits will also be developed urgently.
