Nuclear installed capacity in Pakistan will be raised to 40 000 MW by 2050, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) chairman said.
Dr Ansar Pervaiz, PAEC chairman said: “Pakistan needs to build more nuclear power plants to overcome severe energy shortfall as the electricity demand has been increasing at a much higher rate compared to the economic growth.”
He said that the long-term strategy developed under the Nuclear Power Vision in order to overcome Pakistan's energy crisis will, after 2021, see PAEC looking to build at least one nuclear power plant very year in order to meet set targets.
This will compliment extensions to standing power plants like: Karachi Nuclear Power Plant and Chashma Nuclear Power Units 1 and 2. Currently, these produce 755 MW and PAEC will look to raise this to 3535 MW by 2021 by the completion of C-3, C-4, K-2 and K-3 projects.
The construction of the K-2 and K-3 projects will create somewhere near 10 000 jobs. Mr. Pervaiz said that these new reactors would use third generation Pressurised Water Reactors (PWR).
