Zafar Mahmood, Chairman of WAPDA, said that there is a dire need to inject low-cost hydropower to the national grid in order to mitigate electricity shortages and reduce the electricity tariff. He said that this meant that it was essential to complete the MRP on schedule.
Ghulam Sarwar Memon, General Manager of the Mangla Dam, said that when the reservoir was filled to its new maximum level, fed by the Chenab and Indus rivers, it would have an additional 3 million acre feet of water for irrigation and could generate an additional 620 million units of electricity. He said that the MRP would be completed in three phases, with the first phase costing $500 million.
