Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a decrease in the levelised tariff for wind power generation. According to the decision, the new tariff, calculated on the basis of the average of 20 years tariff, would now be Rs 10.6048/kWh ($ 0.10/kWh), compared to the previous tariff of Rs 13.1998/kWh ($ 0.13/kWh). The new tariff will remain applicable for six months.

Prospective investors opting for this tariff will have to achieve financial closure within one year from the date of NEPRA awarding upfront tariff to them. The targeted maximum construction period after financial closure is 18 months. These periods have been chosen to ensure early completion of the projects.

NEPRA said that only companies that have been recommended by relevant agencies, that can certify that they would install new plant and machinery to international standards, and that have installed capacity of up to 250 MW would be eligible for this tariff.

A spokesperson for NEPRA said: “The tariff of wind power has reduced over time as a result of advancement in technology. There is a massive potential for wind projects in Pakistan, because of high wind speeds in many parts of the country.”
