The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has announced that the 340 MW Chashma Unit 3 (C3) has been connected to Pakistan’s national grid. C3 is Pakistan’s 4th operating nuclear reactor. PAEC said that the supply of electricity generated by C3 to the grid has started on a trial basis.

A spokesman for PAEC said: “After performing various safety and functional tests, the plant will attain full power in the first fortnight of December 2016, and a formal inauguration ceremony of the full power grid connection will be held in December.”

Pakistan’s first three reactors, Kanupp at Karachi and C1 and C2 at Chashma generate a combined 600 MW. Two larger capacity nuclear power reactors K2 and K3 near Karachi are under construction, and are scheduled to be completed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
