Indian state-run power generation company NTPC said that it will add 4500 MW of capacity in 2016-2017, more than double the 2200 MW added in 2015-2016. It also said that an increase in the price of coal would mean a rise in the cost of electricity. Coal India (CIL) plans to increase average coal prices by 6.29 per cent, which will cause a rise in power tariffs across India.
Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC also said that it is looking to modernise its old plants. He said: “We need to decommission old plants for retrofitting. This will involve cost and time. There will be a tariff rise for this. We know tariff is a sensitive issue, and we will ensure that the new plants are commissioned before the old ones start getting upgraded.”
