India’s state government has exempted payment of electricity duty on captive generation of electricity for self-consumption. Amidst power shortages, many industrial businesses had been paying a duty of Rs 25 paise ($0.0045) per unit in electricity duty for captive power generation. This they no longer have to do following the government’s decision. The exemption is conditional upon the power being generated solely for their own consumption, and not being sold to the grid.
