Saidu Mohammed, Chief Operating Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has said that it will develop about 4000 MW of power capacity over the next ten years to boost power supply in the country. NNPC said that it would achieve this by building IPPs.
Mohammed said that the power plants will be built over the next 3-10 years by Incorporated Joint Venture (IJV) companies involving NNPC, international power companies, and local Nigerian investors. These would follow the same structure as the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) business model.
Mohammed said: “NNPC has interest in two power plants, one in Okpai, Delta State, and the other in Afam, Rivers State, which were respectively built by our joint ventures with Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), and Shell. These two power plants collectively generate up to 1000 MW.”
He said that there were plans to start Okpai Phase 2, and that other power plants such as Obite and Agura would also be progressed soon.
