Neyveli Lignite Corporation to increase capacity by 4000 MW

Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) India Limited will increase power capacity by 2640 MW, according to Sarat Kumar Acharya, Chairman and Managing Director of NLC.

Acharya said that the company’s project to increase lignite-based power generation by 1320 MW, consisting of two 660 MW units, has nearly reached completion. He also said that the company has proposed to add another two 660 MW units in the second phase at Neyveli.

He said that the company has also awarded contracts for increasing coal-based power generation by another 1980 MW through its joint venture Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL) at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, and by another 500 MW through an expansion at Barsingsar power plant, and a green field project at Bithnok, both in Rajasthan.

Acharya said: “With the government allocating extra coal from the Talabira mine blocks in Odisha, we have taken up a plan of 4000 MW capacity addition in coal-based power generation in two phases.”

On renewable energy, he said that the company has started construction work for a 130 MW solar power plant at the Neyveli complex. “We are also in the process of setting up solar installations to the tune of 500 MW in Tamil Nadu and 250 MW in Odisha.” He said the company has proposed to set up 1000 MW of solar installations in each of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, and a 200 MW wind farm in Tamil Nadu.
