A new Power Plant Operations Report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows significant renewables growth across many states in the last decade.
In 2011, Maine had the highest percentage of non-hydro renewable generation, at 27 per cent of total in-state generation, up from 20 per cent in 2001.
South Dakota and Iowa followed, with 21 per cent and 17 per cent, in 2011 respectively, up from 1 per cent and less than one per cent in 2001.
Wind power was revealed as the largest driver of this increase.
If hydro is included, the picture changes dramatically. In 2011, the states with the largest shares of generation coming from renewables including hydro were: Idaho at 93 per cent, Washington at 82 per cent, and Oregon at 78 per cent.
The EIA also note that hydro production was particularly high in the Pacific Northwest throughout 2011.
