More coal-fired power plants for Philippines

Rowena Cristina Guevara, Energy Undersecretary for the Philippines, said that nine coal-fired power projects with a combined capacity of 2255 MW will become operational in the next three years.

She said that these projects were proposed and approved before the coal moratorium was implemented in late 2020, and that the government didn’t have the authority to halt coal developments approved before the moratorium was in place.

Five of the plants are located in Mariveles, Bataan, two in Masinloc, Zambales, and one each in Iloilo and Misamis Oriental.

Guevara said that renewable energy will overtake coal by 2028 as more offshore wind projects are expected to be developed. Currently, coal supplies 62 per cent of the country’s power generation, while renewables only account for 22 per cent.
