Hyperion Power Generation, from New Mexico, USA, has said that it has commercialised small modular nuclear reactors for power generation for use by small island states in the Pacific. The reactors use liquid metal to create heat inside of the reactor to generate electricity.
John Grizz Deal, CEO of Hyperion Power Generation, said that there has been growing global interest in the technology that has been designed to be, in his words: “Easily transportable, safer, clean, sustainable and affordable. Our reactor is of a class that’s referred to as a mini power reactor, in that it’s designed for very specific kind of use, and while it’s not a personal nuclear reactor, it is designed for very small communities of 20,000-50,000 people, or a military base, a mining operation, or something like that, where there is a need for distributed or dedicated power.” He said that the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has already expressed an interest in the nuclear reactor.
