Mexican President Felipe Calderon has said that his country will reduce the carbon dioxide (CO
2
) emissions by 50 million tons by the end of 2012, thus becoming the first developing country to achieve this goal.
The president said that this was a goal established in the national programme against climate change.
He added that in 2006, Mexico only had 2 MW of wind energy but now produced 520 MW from wind.
Five wind farms are now being built in Mexico, which would help reduce almost 20 million tons of CO
2
emissions in the future, he said.
