The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) of the Philippines has announced increases in power rates. Local power rates, the second highest in Asia (behind Singapore), will rise by 51 centavos/kWh from P 5.02/kWh to P 5.53/kW, a 10 percent increase.
According to Meralco, the increase is primarily due to the hike in generation cost of all its suppliers for the month of May. System peak demand for power rose by over 400 MW from April to May. As a result, more electricity was needed during daytime peak periods.
Meralco said that with the onset of the rainy season, residential customers and commercial establishments with large air-conditioning loads might see a decline in their electricity consumption.
