The Mangla Refurbishment Project announced by the Pakistan Government will increase the total generation capacity of the Mangla hydroelectric power station from 1000 to 1310 MW. It has been announced that the project will be completed in three phases, at a cost of over $500 million.

According to official sources, the timely completion of the Mangla refurbishment project is vital for injecting low cost hydroelectric power to the national grid to meet the country’s electricity shortage and reduce the electricity tariff. The sources said that the Mangla Dam will be raised to 1242 feet, covering an additional three million acres, and allowing the additional generation of 620 million units of electricity.

Mangla Power House first started operation in 1967, with four 100 MW turbines. Since then, it has been added to, reaching its current 1000 MW capacity in 1994. The refurbishment has been brought about by the need to upgrade the aging turbines, the increase demand for electricity in the country, and the increased water capacity brought about by raising the height of the dam.
