Najib said: “I mentioned to Prime Minister Lee the possibility of us selling electricity to Singapore, which he warmly welcomed. In fact, Singapore is about to work out a framework for the possibility of it importing electricity from neighbouring countries.”

Lee said that Singapore is open to importing a certain portion of electricity from Malaysia, if the terms are right and if the private sector proposes an attractive offer. Najib said that he believed that the private sectors of both countries will be in a position to determine the right price level.

Lee said: “We are in the process of working out a proper framework to manage these imports of electricity, and once this framework is ready, we welcome Malaysian companies to participate and to bid to supply electricity to Singapore.” He also said that in reaching a decision on the matter, Singapore would also need to study the environmental impact as well as cross-border implications to the immediate neighbours of power generation companies.
