Preliminary reports suggest that the fire was caused by a blast. The blaze generated a pillar of fire rising 50m. One person is known to have died, and 13 injured. The spokesman said: “A gas container at the plant caught fire. The gas pipeline was closed off, and the thermal plant shut down.”

TASS has reported that the fire has now been completely extinguished.

The 1060MW gas-fired Severnaya plant entered service in 1992.
