Official figures from the UK government showed that low carbon electricity accounted for 50 per cent of generation in the third quarter of 2016, up from 45.3 per cent for the same period in 2015. Low carbon supply includes wind turbines, solar panels, wood burning, and nuclear reactors. This is the first time over 50 per cent of UK electricity has come from low carbon sources over a quarter. The UK Government said that the rise was largely driven by new windfarms and solar farms being connected to the grid, and several major coal-fired power stations closing.
