Officials of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) have announced that Unit 2 of Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, India, went critical on 10 July. This is the second 1000 MW PWR to go critical in the country. Kudankulam unit 1 went critical in June 2013.
Unit 2 will start commercial generation in 4-6 months. Prior to that, tests will be conducted, and then the unit will be added to India’s Southern power grid.
