Korea Southern Power Co (KOSPO) has announced that it will be making significant investments into new and renewable energy projects. KOSPO is accelerating its efforts to build such infrastructure, with the stated goal of building additional wind power units, along with 100 small hydropower units.
KOSPO’s move is in line with the goal of the South Korean Government to increase renewable power generation by 20 per cent by 2030. KOSPO is aimed to achieve 30 per cent by 2030.
KOSPO operates 51 wind power units with a combined capacity of 105 MW. In 2016, it put the 30 MW Pyeongchang Wind Power Plant into commercial service, which will supply power for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. KOSPO is commissioning the 32 MW Jeongam Wind Power Project and the 20 MW Gyenaemi Wind Power Project later this year. It said that next year, it will build a 30 MW wind power plant in Samcheok, the 60 MW Ahnin Power Plant in Gangneung, and a 100 MW plant in Daejeong-up.
KOSPO is seeking to develop small hydropower resources, and said that it will build 100 such units across South Korea by 2019.
