Tabish Gohar, CEO of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) said that KESC would increase its generation capacity to around 1100 MW until March 2012 through the use of Thar coal. He said that Bin Qasim Power Plant was being converted to coal, from which 400 MW of “cheap” electricity would be generated for consumers over the next two years.
Tabish said that Abrash Capital has invested $350,000 in KESC, and plans to invest another $65,000 by next year. He said that as a result, KESC increased its capacity to 850 MW, and this is expected to rise to 1100 MW by March 2012, and he added that coal-fired capacity was cheaper than that of furnace oil, with coal-generated electricity costing $0.08 per kWh, compared to $0.18 per kWh for furnace oil.
Tabish said that he anticipated that KESC would generate 400 MW from Thar coal in the next two years.
