Kenya’s government has announced plans to invest $386 million to increase national electricity coverage.
Alex Wachira, Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Energy, said that this will increase overage to 80 per cent and reduce the country’s reliance on biomass. The objective is to connect one million new customers to electricity over the next two years. The French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the EU have jointly provided $170 million.
The programme will focus on building mini-grids in 14 northeastern counties of Kenya. It also aims to improve transmission infrastructure.
