Kenya’s Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), formerly Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board, is seeking regulatory approval for construction of a $5 billion nuclear power plant in Kenya. In its submissions to the National Environment Management Authority, NuPEA said that it is on course to build and operate the country’s first nuclear reactor at Tana River, with commercial operation scheduled to start in 2027.
NuPEA said in a statement: “The first nuclear power plant of 1000 MW is expected to be commissioned by 2027, and it is expected to grow to 4000 MW by 2035.” It said that it was in the process of evaluating suitable nuclear technologies.
Four 1000 MW reactors are expected to be operational by 2035, for a total project cost of around $20 billion.
